A friendly atmosphere and good
cheer welcomed Society members over the weekend of the 6th and 7th of
March at RAF Cranwell. On Saturday the 6th, the Society kindly hosted
the the Civil Service Annual Indoor championships. Some of the PAAS members
used this shoot to get some practice for Sunday which boasted nearly twice
the number of targets and even a "kicking" sound system that
greeted archers on their arrival into the sports hall!
The day began with the Society's Annual General Meeting. The commitee
introduce themselves to new society members and discussed with the members
plans for the coming year including the summer champs and the the proposal
for the Society to have its own shooting colours.
Once the meeting was over, the shoot began. The tension was mounting...
would the PAAS team beat the Civil Service Team? Would Brampton/Wyton
come to blows with Lossiemouth in the interstation competition?.... Actually,
the shoot began after the backstop netting was repositioned to catch arrows
behind the longbow targets! Taking a mere ten minutes per end(!), the
shoot progressed through the afternoon under the watchful eyes of John
Carder and Bob Stevens until the Portsmouth round was over. After a detailed
briefing by Steve Wildman and the knockout competition took place and
was uncharacteristically won by a compound archer. All was over bar the
shouting until it became apparrent that the Service Gents section had
decided to give Steve Wildman a hard time. With Bob Simpson and Yours
Truly having scored exactly the same. Steve decided that a "shoot
off" was necessary to decide who had to engrave the trophy this year.
With a tension that wont be experienced even in athens later this year,
the two ferocious athletes took to the line. Three arrows later, Martin
had another engraving bill to pay.
This years summer champs will mark the 40th anniversary of the Per Ardua
Archery Society. If the banter, atmosphere and enjoyment of the Indoor
championships is any sort of indication, it should be a weekend to remember! |
